During my saddle-fitting consultation, I assess three elements: the horse, the rider and the saddle. I complete this meticulous process in five steps.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Step 1: the interview<\/h5>\n

Since I like to get the full picture, I start every consultation with an interview. I ask questions mainly about the horse\u2019s body,which may include issues such as previous injuries and treatments.<\/p>\n

Step 2: Palpation and static testing<\/h5>\n

I then take into account that information as I examine the horse in standstill position. I start with palpation, which involves using my hands to assess the condition of the horse\u2019s body and identify any differences in temperature, as well as muscle tension and differences in anatomic dimension.
 
The next step is to perform active tests, including a spine test, lateral flexion of the neck, a wither lift, and a pelvic tilt.<\/p>\n

Step 3: Movement analysis<\/h5>\n

The next step involves watching the horse in motion. This helps me to identify any difference in fit, any asymmetries in the pelvis or the body, and whether the horse has a preferred side.<\/p>\n

Step 4: rider information and the current saddle<\/h5>\n

Since the horse, the rider and the saddle are all inextricably linked, I also make sure to find information about your current saddle and yourself \u2013 including height, weight, training level, and injury history.<\/p>\n

Step 5: the right saddle<\/h5>\n

Based on these findings, I then make a selection of suitable saddles, after which you will take them for a test run. As before, I observe the horse and the rider, both in standstill and in motion.
 
I make any alterations and modifications required either on the spot or later on, in my studio. All horses undergo all sorts of changes throughout their lives. For example, if you\u2019ve eased off on training for a while, the saddle\u2019s fit will need to be adjusted due to a loss of muscle mass. Saddles also change throughout their lifecycle. Regular saddle maintenance helps you prevent wear and tear and physical discomfort.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Natalie thoroughly examined my horse and my saddle, which is how we found out that my old saddle had become too tight for my horse. She explained everything very clearly: it turned out the saddle could not be altered, after which I decided to invest in a new saddle. <\/p>\n

Again, Natalie took a lot of time to explain to me what she pays attention to, and how the saddle can affect both the horse and the rider. I really felt heard by her, and was able to ask any questions I wanted. I was experiencing some issues with my horse, and had already consulted several people who all gave me some sort of advice, but I suspected there might be a technical issue with the saddle. I subsequently attended an ESS industry event, where I met Natalie and where I got confirmation that the problems I was experiencing were related to my saddle \u2013 including both jumping saddles and dressage saddles. <\/p>\n

After I had my horse treated by a vet, Natalie came to see me again to fit a new saddle. She is extremely patient, knowledgeable, and I really feel she understands me!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t

My horse, Discovery, is affected by impinging dorsal spinous processes (\u2018kissing spines\u2019), and I myself have a disability in both my right arm and my right leg. This possibly makes it even more important for me to have a well-fitting saddle. Before I met Natalie, I was noticing that Discovery\u2019s back had become extremely sensitive and that he just wasn\u2019t relaxed whenever we were riding. Natalie checked everything and re-padded the saddle. This made a world of difference, and we\u2019ve been running smoothly ever since. <\/p>\n
